BirdBrain Says Summer Fun Can Happen at Home
Detroit – Theres plenty to do this summer to keep youngsters active and happy in their own backyards, saving parents time and money.
Sad faces on children with little to do inside can turn into broad grins in the time it takes to fire up the grill outside for meats and vegetables and set out lemonade, snacks and a few board games. And large pillows on an outdoor area rug will invite young guests to lounge and frolic.
But outdoor accessory experts, such as CEO Christine King of Ypsilanti, Mich.-based Bird Brain, makers of hand-crafted bird feeders and firepot gel burners, say extra steps should be taken to keep children safe around anything thats flammable.
Kids should be kept away from any kind of product with an open flame, and told so before the outdoor party with their friends gets started, King said.
As for other outdoor flammable products, one leading grill manufacturer had the following advice:
Set up with care. Place grill on a stable, level and flame-retardant surface so it wont topple. Keep it away from deck railing, fencing, hanging plants, shrubbery or porch covers to avoid sudden flare-ups. Keep little ones away. Never leave the grill unattended. Keep children and pets away from it at all times. In fact, they should remain indoors when the charcoals are lit. Use the right tools. Have long-handled tongs for charcoal and food-turning, a grilling grid and trays, wire grill brush and insulated mitts on hand. The job will be easier and safer with the right equipment. Carefully light a fire. Place charcoal briquettes in a pyramid formation at the bottom of the grill and follow manufacturers directions for adding and igniting lighter fluid. Never use other fluids or substances to light a charcoal fire. Never re-douse hot coals with lighter fluid. The stream of fluid could catch fire. Kill the blaze slowly. Put the cover on the grill and close the vents, allowing the coals to fizzle out and the ashes to cool. This may take up to two days. Throw away the remaining debris in a fireproof container.
