MORE NUTRITION FOR YOUR BUCKS
Eating better doesn’t mean you have to spend more at the supermarket. A new guide in the March 2011 issue of ShopSmart, from the publisher of Consumer Reports, crunches the numbers to find foods that pack lots of nutrition for the buck. “Sometimes all it takes is a few tweaks to your shopping list,” says Lisa Lee Freeman, editor in chief of ShopSmart. Some examples:
Cabbage: Get a super nutrient fix at 16 cents a serving. Cabbage is loaded with vitamins A and C.
Try an Asian- inspired slaw of shredded cabbage, cashews and a lime and sesame oil- vinaigrette. When wrapped in a perforated plastic bag in the fridge, it can be stored for two weeks.
Quinoa: Stay regular for less than 50 cents a serving. Quick- cooking quinoa has almost 50 percent more fiber than brown rice, plus a dose of protein. Simmer with milk and honey for a comforting hot breakfast, or use quinoa in place of rice. Store in an airtight container in a cool, dark place for up to one year.
Flaxseed: At 11 cents a serving, flaxseed has omega-3s and other fatty acids linked to immune- system strength, cardiovascular health and cancer prevention. Whole flaxseeds pass through the body undigested, so grind them in the coffee grinder first and then mix with spices to sprinkle on beans, grains and salads. Store in a dark, dry and cool place for two to three months.
SIZZLER ADDS TRI-TIP
Sizzler is now serving up tri-tip steak on its menu.
For $10.99, you can order a 100 percent USDA Choice cut with all-you-can-eat salad from Sizzler’s famous salad bar. Tri-tip sirloin has a lower fat content and reduced price tag than most other cuts of meat. The steaks are hand-cut in each Sizzler restaurant by a certified meat cutter to preserve freshness before they’re flame-grilled.
Sizzler has locations in Sunland, North Hollywood and Burbank. For additional locations, visit sizzler.com.
